5 Things Great Leaders Know (That Most People Don't)

When I first stepped into leadership, I had no idea what I was doing.
No roadmap. No manual. Just trial, error, and eventually — a mentor who changed everything.
That mentorship cracked open my world, and inspired me to pursue my Masters of Arts in Leadership.
Looking back, here are 5 things I wish someone had told me from the start:
1️⃣ Leadership is deeply personal.
If you haven’t led yourself first, leading others is an uphill battle. Self-awareness isn’t a soft skill — it’s the foundation.
2️⃣ You don’t need all the answers.
The best leaders I know are the ones who say, “I don’t know — let’s figure it out together.” That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom.
3️⃣ Leadership isn’t a popularity contest.
Not everyone will like you. Not every decision will land well. The sooner you make peace with that, the more effective you’ll become.
4️⃣ Trust is everything.
Without it, you can’t move a team forward — no matter how strong your strategy or vision is.
5️⃣ Feedback flows both ways.
As a leader, you need to be just as comfortable receiving feedback as you are giving it. That loop is where real growth happens.
Leadership isn’t about having it all figured out.
It’s about showing up, staying curious, and being willing to grow alongside your team.
