Re-Birth

“Have you been fired before?

That was the question I was recently asked. When I heard it, I thought it was the most insane thing to ask someone.

My facial expression likely reflected how insane I thought it was. I responded “No!” like it was one of the greatest sins you could commit, and would be embarrassed to admit even if I had been. He continued “you should try it sometime. It’s the most freeing thing that can happen to you”.

I reflected on this statement, while having a million of my own conversations in my head about how absurd this conversation felt “is this guy out of his mind?” He went on to share his own personal experiences about being fired multiple times, and what those experiences allowed him to create.

Not even a week later, I receive a call from HR early one morning informing me that my employment is being terminated. A few minutes later, the phone call ends and I find myself sitting on my stairs wondering “What the fuck. What’s next. This feels like shame, embarrassment, and a whole lot of stress.

How is this freeing?

I let some time pass….

I thank the individual for his words of wisdom when he asked me this question

There is fear in the unknown.

It’s fear and liberating

It can be polarizing

But both can be true at the same time.

Lean into it.

Get curious.

This might be the best thing that could happen to you.

….and it has been. This re-birth might just be the best one yet!
